LA PUERTA: A GOOD CHOICE IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO

SAN DIEGO — Downtown San Diego offers a wide variety of options when it comes to eating and drinking. The number of good bars and restaurants makes deciding where to eat or drink a tough task sometimes.

One of these good places is La Puerta, a Mexican bar and restaurant near the corner of 4th Ave and Market St.

La Puerta has more 1800 reviews on Yelp with a rating of four stars. In general, the restaurant offers a please experience to its visitors for three reason. Good food, good drinks and a good vibe.

Review:

  • Food

La Puerta offers a a variety of good appetizers like the chips and guacamole which is served with excellent verde and regular salsa.

The restaurant also offers a variety of huge “1LB Burritos.” with the California being an excellent choice for the main course.

Portions at La Puerta are quite especially the burritos and appetizers.

Overall La Puerta serves good food with very good portions.

  • Drinks:

La Puerta signature drinks are the frozen margarita (Wheel In The Sky) and the frozen Mojito (Mr. MoJo Risin’). What makes these drinks special is the use of fresh lime and fresh mint.

The drinks menu include several kinds of margarita and several other cocktails that are very well prepared such as the “Purple Haze” margarita and the “When Doves Cry” cocktail

The bar also includes domestic and Mexican imported beer as well as several kinds of wine.

Tequila lovers will also enjoy the drinks menu at La Puerta as their offer a big selection of fine tequila.

The cocktails at La Puerta are excellent especially the frozen mojito and the frozen margarita. It is actually the bar that draws the crowd towards the restaurant and gives its identity.

  • Hours of Operation and Location

La Puerta is open daily form morning until 2 a.m. and has a great location in the heart of downtown San Diego that is a walking distance from businesses and night clubs.

The convenient location and hours of operation gives makes La puerta and excellent stop for lunch or a quick relaxing drink after a night in spent in a noisy club.

The fact that the kitchen does not close until 1 a.m. makes La Puerta a great place for a late night bite and drink.

  • Happy Hour

It is not only food and drinks that make La Puerta and very good choice. The happy hour also offers a great encouragement to go to La Puerta.

There is daily happy hour from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (except Monday 3 p.m until 2 a.m). The happy hour include half the price of the great drinks and appetizers.

The San Diego tradition of Taco Tuesday is also included at La Puerta as there is special pricing on beer and Tacos.

The late night (10 p.m. to 2 a.m.) prices are also encouraging as the brilliant frozen margaritas and mojitos are only $5.

  • Prices

while the happy hour and late night prices are very encouraging, prices outside these hours are very reasonable. The excellent cocktails at La Puerta range from $6.50 to $15 while the massive burritos range $9 to $14. Appetizers and beer are also relatively in expensive.

  • Service

Servers and Bartenders are generally friendly at La Puerta. However, the service is slightly slow, especially when it comes to seating and taking orders.

Service during happy hour is slow as the restaurant and bar appeared to be understaffed, while the late service during regular hours can be attributed to the place being small and busy.

The Bouncer at the door checks for Identification Cards as entry is restricted to people 21 years and older after 3 p.m.

According to the website, the age restriction also applies when “DJs or musicians are performing.”

  • Atmosphere

The atmosphere at La Puerta is mostly casual but also depends on the day and time. Generally Tuesday, Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights. A DJ or musicians performance is expected during these night and reservation are required.

The small place means there is limited seating and people during the bar will stand at the bar.

During happy hour and less busy nights are more quite and less busy. These times are good for enjoying a drink and a chat with friends.

Sports fans can also also enjoy a drink while watching their favorite teams as TVs are available and are usually showing sports. However, The TVs are muted as La Puerta does not offer a sports bar atmosphere.
