SAN DIEGO- Hungry beach-goers, you’re in for a treat! There’s a new kid on the block in Pacific Beach and its name is Backyard Kitchen & Tap.

A sister restaurant to Pacific Beach Alehouse and Union Kitchen & Tap, Backyard brings a new concept to the ever-familiar Garnet Avenue. The “coastal American eatery” is filled with fire pits, cabanas, flat screen TVS, and get this – the entrance is a garage door. To top it off, customers can kick back and enjoy some live music on the weekends. It’s pretty much your own backyard, or shall I say, your dream backyard.

The restaurant had it’s grand opening Saturday March 7th which I attended with a few friends. We were greeted by two smiling hostesses and immediately taken to a table next to the bar. The staff was wearing flannels and shorts, which I thought coincided well with the casual backyard vibe.

Shortly after only taking a glance at the menu, our server greeted us and asked what she could get us to drink. We decided on Moscow Mules, $9 each, which turned out to be nice and strong! Five stars for the drink category.

Before we ordered our food, the server informed us that her favorites were the ceviche and the salmon. My two friends took her advice and ordered the salmon, but I decided to go a different route and try the chicken sandwich. The salmon, a bit pricey at $19, was delicious and most definitely worth the cost. On the other hand, my sandwich, $13, was mediocre at best. The chicken was almost flavorless and I wasn’t a fan of the fries it came with. Next time I’ll stick to the server’s advice and order seafood. Three stars for the food category.

As for the service, A+! Our server was very attentive throughout our visit and the manager even came up to us to ask how everything was. The entire staff seemed to know what they were doing, which is pretty impressive for a grand opening.

Two rounds of drinks and three plates of food left us with a grand total of $90. Not exactly what I had expected to spend considering how casual the place was, but I can guarantee that they will have no problem attracting business this summer due to their prime location.

So if your backyard is an alley like mine, Backyard Kitchen & Tap wants to lend you theirs – just make sure your wallet is up for the trade.
